How to clean the microwave with vinegar and lemon, no scrubbing

Splashes of tomato sauce, cheese that escaped from the plate or milk that boiled over end up forming a crust inside the microwave that doesn't come off with one pass of a cloth. The usual reaction is to reach for a spray degreaser, which leaves a chemical smell right in the appliance where you heat your food.

There is a much simpler way: let steam do the work. It is one of the fastest formulas in Clean Without Harm and you don't need to scrub.

Why the steam trick works

Microwave dirt is mostly grease and dried food residue. When you heat water with vinegar inside the closed appliance, the hot steam condenses on the walls and ceiling and rehydrates that crust. The vinegar, slightly acidic, helps loosen the residue and neutralizes odors. After a few minutes, what was stuck before wipes off with a damp cloth.

The lemon is not just decorative: it adds a fresh scent that replaces the smell of reheated food.

Ingredients

  • 200 ml water
  • 30 ml white cleaning vinegar
  • 5 drops of lemon essence

If you don't have lemon essence, you can add a few slices of fresh lemon. The cleaning result is the same; only the intensity of the aroma changes.

Step by step

  1. Mix the water, vinegar and essence in a glass or ceramic bowl that is microwave-safe. Use a wide bowl, not a narrow glass.
  2. Heat on full power for 3 or 4 minutes, until the liquid boils and the door glass fogs up with steam.
  3. Wait 5 minutes without opening the door. It is the most important step: that is when the steam softens the encrusted dirt.
  4. Take out the bowl carefully (with an oven mitt or a cloth, because it will be very hot).
  5. Wipe with a damp cloth the ceiling, walls, base and turntable. The splashes come off without scrubbing.

Precautions

  • Open the door slowly and keep your face back: a puff of hot steam comes out.
  • Don't use metal containers or bowls with gold or silver rims.
  • Water can "superheat" without visibly boiling in very smooth containers. If you don't see bubbles, don't shake the bowl as soon as you take it out; wait a few seconds. Putting a wooden spoon or a toothpick in the bowl during heating helps prevent it.
  • Don't mix vinegar with bleach or with other cleaning products. In this article we explain which combinations you should never make.

How often to do it

Once a week is usually enough in a kitchen used daily. If you do it before dirt builds up, you don't even need the 5-minute wait: two minutes of steam is enough.

A maintenance trick: cover dishes when heating them with a lid made for microwaves. It reduces splashes to almost zero.

More formulas for the kitchen

This cleaner is part of the kitchen chapter of Clean Without Harm, along with formulas to degrease the range hood and its filters or to shine stainless steel. The book also explains what each ingredient does and why it is combined one way and not another, so you can adapt the formulas to your home safely.
